5 Things to do in St Davids

If you can bear to tear yourself away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, then there are plenty of exciting experiences to have in St David’s (Britain’s smallest city) during your stay at Wyncliffe Hideaway Shepherd’s Hut. Here are some of our recommendations (in no order of preference):

1. ICE CREAM AT THE BENCH:

Home made ice cream made on the premises . Lots of lovely flavours to choose from. Daily flavour changes. Sorbets are vegan and dairy free. Gluten free ice cream and cones. 5 minutes stroll from the Hut!

2. VISIT THE CATHEDRAL AND BISHOPS PALACE:

Just two minutes walk (you can see the cathedral spire from our driveway at Wyncliffe Hideaway), St David’s Cathedral is a must visit attraction. As a bonus the neighbouring Bishop’s Palace is also worth spending time exploring, see more on both attractions in our Cathedrals, Churches and Castles blog.

3. SHOPPING

There are an abundance of shops for the shop-a-holics coming to stay in St David’s.

4. ORIEL Y PARC GALLERY & VISITOR CENTRE

Oriel y Parc Visitor Centre and Gallery is located in St Davids, Britain’s smallest city, and is in the UK’s only truly coastal National Park. Our gallery, home to Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales in Pembrokeshire, displays works of art from the national collection, with exhibitions drawing inspiration from Pembrokeshire’s incredible landscapes. Within the visitor centre, our friendly team can help you make the most of any visit to the St Davids Peninsula. We can advise on walks, beaches, great places to watch wildlife and nearby activities and attractions. Visit our Discovery Room where you can unleash your creative side, or watch our Artist in Residence at work in the studio. We also have a gluten free friendly “Pilgrim’s Café” serving breakfasts and lunches using local fresh produce. Also available are indulgent coffees and specialist teas with a range of delicious cakes. We also have outside seating in our courtyard.

5. RAMSEY ISLAND:

No trip to St Davids & Wyncliffe Hideaway Shepherd’s Hut should be complete unless you go on one of the famous boat trips to Ramsey Island and Ramsey Sound.

Ramsey Island (Ynys Dewi) lies off the headland to the west of St Davids, ringed by dramatic sea cliffs and an offshore armada of rocky islets and reefs. The island is a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reserve famous for its large breeding population of choughs – members of the crow family with glossy black feathers and distinctive red bills and legs – and for its grey seals.

You can reach the island by boat from the tiny harbour at St Justinian, 2 miles west of St Davids. Longer boat trips run up to 20 miles offshore, to the edge of the Celtic Deep, to spot whales, porpoises and dolphins. What you’ll see depends on the weather and the time of year; July to September are the best months. Porpoises are seen on most trips, dolphins on four out of five, and there’s a 40% chance of seeing whales. The most common species is the minke, but pilot whales, fin whales and orcas have also been spotted.

Check out our Islands and Boat Trips blog for more detailed information on how to explore this incredible area of west Wales by boat!
